Menu Planning

Does dinnertime creep up on you and find yourself staring at the fridge trying to figure out what's for dinner 15 minutes before dinner time? Well I have an idea that may work for you. With a little organization you can have weekly menus for a whole year and eliminate the guess work!

A while back I mentioned that I was gathering recipes to make weekly menu's for the whole year. It took some time, a lot of organization and finally I am done. I am thrilled with how everything is working! This idea first came from Nanny Goat and their 30 meals program. I followed their 30 day meal plan for a year and it was great, but we got tired of some of the recipes and so I did a little tweaking to create a new rotating menu for the year!

Here is what I did:I bought a small 6 x9 binder from Staples. I wanted it smaller so it wouldn't take up to much counter space. And it fits nicely into a recipe stand...like these.
Next I gathered our families tried and true favorite recipes and we even tried some new ones. We came up with 50 dinner recipes and 7 breakfasts, 11 lunches, several snacks and desserts of course. Then I typed each and every recipe we use, down to the really basic ones just so I had them visually. If I was just going to make hamburgers I would write down that recipe, even though I know how to make hamburgers without a recipe...having it there visually helped with my planning.
It took several weeks for me to type them up but once they were done I used the handy excel sheet from Food Storage Made Easy found here to calculate how much of each ingredient is needed for each recipe. This serves as an inventory tracker. This helps me buy just the things my family eats and keeps track of how much we have on hand and what I need to buy. So now I know how many jars of peanut butter and jelly I need to make pb& j sandwiches throughout the year! Crazy huh? Then I took it one more step...I took all of my printed recipes and organized them into categories such as Chicken, Soups, Mexican, Italian, Beef, Pork, Salads. Once they were separated I figured out weekly menus using a variety of meals for 10 weeks. In each of our weekly menus there are many meals that will leave leftovers for the next night. For example if I served a roast on Sunday and we had left over meat I will use the meat for enchiladas or tacos the following night and if I make enchiladas we will have leftovers for the next night. Friday night is our date night and I don't cook on those nights.. the kids will have leftovers or we will put together a simple dinner like mac and cheese for the kids.

The 10 weeks then went into a menu planning sheet that I created on Excel. On this sheet I list the meals for the week and the ingredients needed to purchase at the market. I take this handy list with me shopping and stock up on non perishables for the next time this weekly menu comes around (10 weeks later)
Tip: I try to prepare as much as I can during my daughter's afternoon nap. This helps relieve some of the dinner time craziness that often comes around during dinner time. Each child also has a responsibility at dinner time to help with dinner prep, set table, clear table and do dishes. This makes dinner time run smoother.

Wow you are so organized! I love this idea. I find myself panicking around dinner time wondering what to fix. I could defiantly use this for sure! Great job!

This is awesome! What a great idea, now to actually do it, looks like it took alot of time to put together.

Ok I love this! I have a similar recipe binder but it's not nearly as cute. And I love how you used our spreadsheet in it. I am the same as you, I put in funny meals like "spaghetti and red sauce" just to remind myself to make them (not because I need a recipe).

I LOVE this!! I may need to put one together for our family.

So, where did you get the really cute paper? I have looked at all the office supply places. I must just be looking in the wrong spot. I have about 15 cook books & use only about 5 recipes from each. I love cooking when I have a plan. Do you have it typed up in an ebook form that you would be willing to share or is all your stuff just compiled from FSME & your own stuff?

Sparrows,

The cute paper is actually from Digital Scrapbooking Memories-In the Mood Collection.
Found here: https://store.digitalscrapbookmemories.com/index.php/catalog/product/view/id/4/category/3
All of the recipes are our family favorite recipes that I entered into the FSME excel sheet. I just typed my recipes into a simple word program.

This totally rocks! I would like to try this, but I don't want to reinvent (and retype) the wheel. Any chance you could email me your files for me to use as a jumping off point? My email is thewaggonerfamily at gmail dot com. Thanks!

This is AMAZING and something I am trying to get organized too. Dinner time has turned into the "witching hour" at times and I want to get organized for the summer. Thanks for sharing this awesome binder!! Found you on Tip Junkie's link party. :)

Ok, you got me started on my cookbook again! I started a similar idea a couple of years ago. I seem to "collect" those little cookbooks from the grocery checkout...ya know the ones! So I went through and tagged each recipe I would actually use then typed them up into my works program. I then printed them off, put them in protector sleeves and organized them by category. Now all I have to do is get it uber-organized like yours with inventory lists (how often do you update those?) and grocery lists. Awesome! Thanks for the great tutorial! I love your blog by the way!

I cannot tell you how much I LOVE your menu binder! This is definitely my next project! You should turn your different sheets into editable pdf files and then sell them on Etsy for people to customize with their own recipes, menus, etc. You'd make a killing! I know I'd definitely buy it! :)
Thanks so much for sharing such a fabulous idea!

Tara..Thank you! You are too sweet. I get excited hearing about others tackling their own binders..especially when customizing it to their own families. I will be posting printables soon. Keep a watch out!

Natalie,
Yay!!! I'll definitely keep a watch out! Meanwhile, I sat down last night and went through all of my recipes and to my surprise, I had a lot more than I thought. I found quite a few that my family loved but for some reason or another, I just forgot about them. I can't wait to make them again! :) Thanks again for the inspiration!

I LOVE this idea and I'm currently putting one together for myself. You say you used a 6 x 9 binder. Were you able to purchase 6 x 9 copy paper and sheet protectors as well, and if so, where? I love the idea of it being a smaller size but don't know where to find them!

I saw that you were going to be posting some printables. If you have done this, where do I find it? If not, I am with the others...would you mind sharing so I don't have to reinvent the wheel? roquemore75 at gmail dot com. Thanks!
